How do I take care of my hair naturally?

Caring for natural hair is mostly about moisture, gentleness and avoiding damage. These steps come from the American Academy of Dermatology’s guidance for Black hair.

Wash once a week or every other week

This reduces product buildup that can dry out your hair.

Condition every time

Focus on the ends, the oldest and most delicate part of your hair.

Use a hot oil treatment twice a month

It adds moisture and makes hair more elastic.

Protect before heat

Apply a heat protecting product to damp hair before heat styling, and if you press your hair, do it no more than once a week at the lowest effective setting.

Keep styles loose

Make sure braids, cornrows or weaves are not too tight. Choosing thicker braids and locs and rotating between tight and loose styles helps protect your hairline.

Choose gentle coverings

When covering your hair, the AAD notes that “a head scarf or other covering made of silk or satin is gentler on hair.”

Wear a cap without sacrificing your style

Natural hair care also includes how you wear accessories over it. Our patented natural hair hat adapter, Capizzy®, turns any fitted or snapback cap into a cap your hair can come through, so locs, puffs, braids, buns and ponytails stay uncrushed. Nothing is cut, and the cap goes back to normal anytime.

Graduating soon? Our patented graduation cap headband, Cappa® Band, lifts the mortarboard off your forehead so it sits back at a flattering angle and frames your face in every photo, whatever your hairstyle.
