How do people with afros wear hats?
An Afro has volume and shape that a standard baseball cap was never designed for. Here are the options people use.
Go bigger on the hat
Hats with a larger crown, like oversized beanies, berets and newsboy caps, can sit over an Afro instead of pressing it flat.
Line it with satin
The American Academy of Dermatology notes that “a head scarf or other covering made of silk or satin is gentler on hair.” Many people wear a satin scarf under a hat or choose satin-lined hats.
Avoid tight fits
The AAD lists tight head coverings that rub against pulled-back hair as a cause of traction alopecia, so skip hats that squeeze.
Wear an Afro puff through the back
For a baseball cap, gathering the Afro into a loose puff and letting it come through the back of the cap keeps the cap on your head and your hair out from under it.
Wear a cap without sacrificing your style
Most baseball caps don’t have an opening big enough for an Afro puff. Our patented natural hair hat adapter, Capizzy®, turns any fitted or snapback cap into a cap your hair can come through, so locs, puffs, braids, buns and ponytails stay uncrushed. Nothing is cut, and the cap goes back to normal anytime.
Graduating soon? Our patented graduation cap headband, Cappa® Band, lifts the mortarboard off your forehead so it sits back at a flattering angle and frames your face in every photo, whatever your hairstyle.
