How to define your natural hair?
“Defining” natural hair usually means helping your curl or coil pattern show clearly. Dermatologist guidance gives you a solid starting point.
1. Know your hair type
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends learning your hair type and choosing products made for it. In the Andre Walker system, 4A hair has a defined O-shaped pattern, while 4C has almost no visible pattern unless seen up close, so expectations for definition differ by type.
2. Condition every wash
Conditioner “moisturizes and detangles your hair, and makes it easier to manage.” For Black hair, the AAD advises conditioning every time you wash and focusing on the ends.
3. Be gentle when hair is wet
“Hair is delicate when it’s wet, so use a wide-tooth comb instead of a brush.”
4. Limit heat
Excessive heat can cause damage, so limit blow drying and flat or curling irons, and use a heat protecting product before heat styling.
5. Add moisture with hot oil
The AAD suggests a hot oil treatment twice a month to add moisture and elasticity.
Wear a cap without sacrificing your style
Once your curls are defined, the last thing you want is a cap that crushes them. Our patented natural hair hat adapter, Capizzy®, turns any fitted or snapback cap into a cap your hair can come through, so locs, puffs, braids, buns and ponytails stay uncrushed. Nothing is cut, and the cap goes back to normal anytime.
Graduating soon? Our patented graduation cap headband, Cappa® Band, lifts the mortarboard off your forehead so it sits back at a flattering angle and frames your face in every photo, whatever your hairstyle.
