What are the top 3 rarest hair types?
This is a popular question, but the honest answer starts with a caveat: there is no official ranking of the rarest hair types.
Rarest by color
Hair color is the easiest trait to measure. It is estimated that approximately 2% of the world’s population has naturally red hair, which makes red one of the least common natural colors. Red hair gets its color mainly from a pigment called pheomelanin, while eumelanin is the dominant pigment in brown and black hair.
Hair count differs by color too
An average blonde person has about 150,000 scalp hairs, a brown-haired person about 110,000, a black-haired person about 100,000 and a redhead about 90,000.
What about texture?
Texture is usually described with the Andre Walker Hair Typing System: Type 1 straight, Type 2 wavy, Type 3 curly and Type 4 kinky-coily. We could not find a reliable source that ranks these types by how rare they are worldwide, so be cautious with any article that claims a definitive top three.
