What is considered natural hair?
“Natural hair” is a term you will hear everywhere in Black hair care, but what does it actually mean?
The short answer
Natural hair refers to afro-textured hair in its unaltered state. It describes hair that has not been chemically straightened with a relaxer. People who wear their hair natural “choose not to relax their hair, allowing it, instead, to grow in its natural texture.”
Does wearing braids or locs still count?
Yes. Natural hair can be worn in many ways, including twists, braids and locs. There is no single required regimen or product line. What matters is that the hair keeps its natural texture.
Where natural hair fits in hair typing
In the widely used Andre Walker Hair Typing System, Type 4 is described as “kinky-coily” hair, the texture most people mean when they talk about natural hair.
Natural hair and the law
On July 3, 2019, California became the first U.S. state to prohibit discrimination over natural hair when it signed the CROWN Act into law. New York followed later that year.
