What is the best natural hair care routine?
There is no single perfect routine for everyone, but the American Academy of Dermatology offers a simple framework for Black hair you can build on.
Weekly or every other week
- Wash once a week or every other week to limit buildup.
- Shampoo your scalp rather than the full length of your hair.
- Condition every time, focusing on the ends.
Twice a month
- Use a hot oil treatment to add moisture and elasticity.
Whenever you use heat
- Apply a heat protecting product to damp hair first.
- Press or flat iron no more than once a week, at the lowest setting that works.
Every day
- Detangle gently, using a wide-tooth comb on wet hair.
- Keep braids, cornrows and weaves loose. If it hurts, it is too tight.
- Rotate between tight and loose styles to give your hairline a break.
Wear a cap without sacrificing your style
A good routine also covers what you wear on top of your hair. Our patented natural hair hat adapter, Capizzy®, turns any fitted or snapback cap into a cap your hair can come through, so locs, puffs, braids, buns and ponytails stay uncrushed. Nothing is cut, and the cap goes back to normal anytime.
Graduating soon? Our patented graduation cap headband, Cappa® Band, lifts the mortarboard off your forehead so it sits back at a flattering angle and frames your face in every photo, whatever your hairstyle.
